Each day brings a new adventure.  Some are quite enjoyable while others are not so much.  Understanding dissociation is difficult when you are in the midst of a crisis situation.  Often you want to react out of  the moment and that is  not a good plan.

Let me give you an example.  In the past we had a young woman who would go into rages.  One evening she went into a rage and threw something through the window and broke it to pieces.  This took place at the community house.  It is very frightening especially for those who live there and have gone through so much trauma.  I responded with anger.  Again, I reacted instead of being proactive.  I was angry that this community member without thinking about the “why” of the person who was in rage.  But then I had an “aha” moment.  “Reactions are irrational and largely outside people’s control.  Intense and barely controllable urges and emotions make people feel crazy – makes them feel that they don’t belong to the human race.” (The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D.).  How awful it must be to feel that you don’t belong to the human race.  It makes me want to weep instead of being angry. How you handle a situation like this is dependent on your understanding dissociation and how to handle the various situations that occur.  The mandate from God is to love at all times.  So I have learned how to slow down, pray and love instead of react to situations when is comes to concerning dissociation.

Yes, we must think about the needs of each person in community on an individual basis but it is God who makes the “plan” for each person.  I am learning through God’s patience!
